The Result of the Presidential Election in the Republic of Maldives

- On October 5, the Elections Commission of Maldives officially announced the result of the second round of the presidential election held on September 30. Japan expresses its congratulations upon the election of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
- The fact that the presidential election was held in a free, fair and transparent manner demonstrates that democracy has gained a solid foothold in the Maldives, and Japan highly welcomes this.
- Japan will further strengthen the cooperative relationship with President-elect Muizzu to further deepen bilateral relations with the Maldives.

- In the first round of the presidential election, held on September 9, none of the candidates were able to win the majority, and so a second round was held between opposition party candidate Dr. Muizzu and incumbent President Solih, the two candidates with the most votes from the first round.
- On October 5, the Elections Commission officially announced that Mr. Muizzu had been elected with 54.06% of the vote compared to incumbent President Solih with 45.96% of the vote.
- This election was the fourth presidential election held since 2008, when Maldives established a democratic constitution.
- The President-Elect will be inaugurated in mid-November.
