On August 8, 2023, diplomatic notes for the entry into force of the "Agreement between Japan and Australia on Facilitation of Mutual Access and Cooperation between the Self-Defense Forces of Japan and the Australian Defense Force (“Japan-Australia Reciprocal Access Agreement”, or “Japan-Australia RAA”)" (signed on January 6, 2022) were exchanged in Tokyo and Canberra. Following this exchange, this Agreement will enter into force on August 13, 2023.

  1. The Japan-Australia RAA aims to facilitate mutually beneficial defense cooperation by establishing a framework for the conduct of such cooperation between the two countries, and by defining the status of the visiting forces and the civilian components.
  2. It is expected that the entry into force of the Agreement will facilitate the conduct of cooperative activities between the defence forces of the two countries, further promote bilateral security and defence cooperation, and enable Japan and Australia to further contribute to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
