International Donor's Conference for the people in Türkiye and Syria affected by the earthquakes of February 2023

On March 20, the International Donor's Conference for the people in Türkiye and Syria affected by the earthquakes of February 2023, co-hosted by the EU and Sweden, was held in Brussels in a hybrid format. Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, participated through video statement. The outline is as follows.
- This meeting was held at the ministerial level, participated by countries and organizasions, for the purpose of securing continued assistance by the international community for the people of Türkiye and Syria who are affected by the earthquake that struck the two countries this February, and for the rehabilitation of the affected areas.
- H.E. Dr. Ursula VON DER LEYEN, President of the European Commission, and H.E. Mr. Ulf KRISTERSSON, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden, co-chaired the meeting. H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN (via video), President of the Republic of Türkiye, and H.E. Mr. Mevlüt ÇAVUŞOĞLU, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, participated in the meeting.
- In his video statement, Minister Hayashi touched upon the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred 12 years ago and explained the dispatch of the Japanese Disaster Relief Team to Türkiye, provision of emergency relief supplies and emergency humanitarian assistance worth about 27 million dollars for Türkiye and Syria. He also stated that Japan will consider further financial assistance for Türkiye and Syria, and contribute by taking advantage of Japan’s advanced technologies and knowledge of disaster risk reduction and post-disaster reconstruction.
- In addition to Japan, participants at the ministerial level included H.E. Mr. Lintner, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Mr. Mitchell, Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom(via video), H.E. Mr. Sajjan, Minister of International Development of Canada (via video). Each participating country explained their assistance for Türkiye and Syria following the earthquake.
