On March 29th, commencing at 3:30 p.m., for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from the Honorable Jared Polis, Governor of the State of Colorado. An overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Governor Polis congratulated the signing of the Japan-U.S. Critical Minerals Agreement (CMA) and expressed his support that Japan will be eligible for the electric vehicle tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Minister Hayashi welcomed Governor Polis’s visit to Japan and expressed his gratitude for Governor Polis’s efforts to build up Japan-Colorado relations. He also signified his hope to cooperate with Governor Polis on further strengthening Japan-U.S. bilateral ties.
  2. Minister Hayashi and Governor Polis then exchanged views on the Japan-Colorado economic relationship, including space, advanced medicine and renewable energy. Reflecting on the fact that Colorado is an aerospace industry hub, Minister Hayashi expressed his hope that the Framework Agreement between Japan and the United States of America for Cooperation in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space signed in January would further promote Japan-U.S. space cooperation. In response, Governor Polis remarked that he looks forward to promoting such bilateral cooperation through initiatives such as the upcoming Space Symposium in Colorado.
  3. Furthermore, they also discussed the Indo-Pacific economic order. In this context, Minister Hayashi expressed Japan’s support for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and Japan’s position on the TPP, to which Governor Polis responded favorably.
