Japan-Fiji Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On August 31, commencing at 4:50 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone talk with Hon. Rear Admiral (Retired) Josaia Voreqe BAINIMARAMA, Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Fiji. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Hayashi stated that Prime Minister Kishida and Prime Minister Bainimarama had a substantial discussion at the informal talk this month, following Minister Hayashi’s visit to Fiji in May, and expressed his willingness to work with Fiji through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) to realize sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the region. Prime Minister Bainimarama once again offered his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe.
- Minister Hayashi stated, regarding the handling of ALPS treated water, Japan will continue its efforts in a transparent manner in accordance with domestic and international safety standards in close cooperation with international community including the IAEA.
- Also, Minister Hayashi expressed his respect for the great success of Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Meeting last month, under the leadership of Prime Minister Bainimarama as the Chair of PIF, and the two sides exchanged their views on several issues including regional security.
- The two sides concurred that Japan and Fiji will continue to cooperate including in the international arena.
