Telephone Talk between Foreign Minister Motegi and UK Secretary of State for International Trade Truss

 On May 25, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with the Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade of the United Kingdom. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Secretary Truss explained the basic idea for the second G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting to be held soon, which Secretary Truss will chair. In response, Minister Motegi stressed the importance that G7 members, shareing values such as democracy and market principles, are united in addressing immediate challenges faced by the international community such as robust recovery from COVID-19, rule-making efforts including for the digital trade, ensuring level-playing field, and WTO reforms.
  2. In addition, the two ministers exchanged views regarding bilateral economic relations and other issues, including the accession request of the United Kingdom to the CPTPP.
  3. The two ministers confirmed that they will continue to closely collaborate towards enhancing cooperation through multilateral systems, including the G7, and bilateral relationship.
