Japan-UAE Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On July 27, commencing at around 5: 35 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Motegi extended his congratulations on the successful launch of a UAE Mars probe onboard a Japanese H-IIA rocket in the early morning on July 20. In response, Minister Abdullah expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation.
- Minister Motegi expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the UAE government in relation to the repatriation of Japanese nationals residing in the UAE on special flights operated by Etihad Airways and Emirates from April to May. The two ministers shared the view to work together to respond to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including the protection of citizens residing in each other’s countries.
- The two ministers also welcomed efforts aimed at the early entry into force of the Japan-UAE Investment Agreement, and affirmed that they will further strengthen bilateral relations based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI).
- The two ministers exchanged views on Middle East affairs and cooperation in international fora, and agreed to continue to work together closely.
