Signing of the U.S.-Taliban Agreement
(Statement by Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu)
1. On February 29, an agreement which includes a conditions-based and phased U.S. troop withdrawal in Afghanistan and commencement of intra-Afghan negotiations, was signed between the U.S. Government and the Taliban. On the same day, the U.S Government and the Afghan Government announced the “Joint Declaration between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the United States of America for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan”. The Government of Japan welcomes these developments as an important step towards durable and comprehensive peace in Afghanistan. We also highly value the efforts made by countries concerned including Qatar.
2. Japan strongly hopes that intra-Afghan negotiations will make a steady and constructive progress in order to realize an Afghan-led durable and comprehensive peace.
3. The Government of Japan will continue to actively contribute to the peace and stability of Afghanistan in cooperation with the international community.
