 On May 17, commencing at 6:05 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from Senator the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Minister for International Development and the Pacific of Australia, during her visit to Japan to attend the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8). The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kono welcomed Minister Fierravanti-Wells on her visit to Japan to attend PALM8, and emphasized the importance of Japan-Australia collabration for realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.
  2. In light of the holding of PALM8, Minister Kono and Minister Fierravanti-Wells exchanged views on the situation of the Pacific island countries, and on Japan and Australia’s efforts in these countries. Furthermore, both ministers shared the view to cooperate closely together for the success of PALM8 and to follow up on its outcomes.
