Dispatch of Election Observer Mission to the Republic of Maldives for presidential election

1. The Government of Japan has decided to dispatch an election observer mission from September 5 to 8 to contribute to free and fair presidential election in the Maldives on September 7. This mission will be headed by Mr.Hideki Ishizuka, Minister/ Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka (with jurisdiction over the Maldives).
2. In the Maldives, the mission will observe the preparation and voting, and exchange views with other election observation missions.
3. The Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the mission to support the effort for consolidation of democracy in the Maldives in response to the announcement by the Election Commission of the Maldives that it would welcome international observers.
