Emergency Assistance to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Response to the Floods Disaster

1. On Tuesday, August 6, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 13 million yen (blankets and sleeping pads) to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Myanmar following serious damage from the floods.

2. In Southern Myanmar, continuous heavy rain since July 27 caused serious floods. According to a news release by the Government of Myanmar, 6 people were killed and approximately 20,000 are affected by the floods (as of August 5). Since more than 4,000 buildings were damaged, many people have been forced to take refuge.

3. In response to the request of the Government of Myanmar, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of longtime friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
