Approval of Mr. Volker Türk, Under Secretary-General for Policy, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by the UN General Assembly

- The Government of Japan welcomes the official approval of Mr. Volker Türk, Under Secretary-General for Policy, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UN General Assembly’s plenary session on September 8.
- In addition to his excellent achievements as Under Secretary-General for Policy, Mr. Türk has held important posts at the Office of the United Nations High Commissionner for Refugees (UNHCR), and has worked tirelessly to tackle a number of global issues including those in the human rights field. The Government of Japan has high hopes that Mr. Türk will exercise strong leadership as the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
- The Government of Japan will continue to contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights in the international community through stronger cooperation with the High Commissionner and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
