Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu: Just now, Vice Minister FUNAKOSHI greeted me, saying “Welcome back.” It has been a while since I entered this building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) last time. I have been reappointed as Foreign Minister after four years. During this period, I believe the international situation surrounding Japan has become increasingly severe and even more challenging.

I feel that the expectations from the international community toward Japan’s diplomacy are now greater than ever before. In order to meet these expectations, I myself intend to take the lead, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs working as one team, to tackle these challenges.

I would like to provide more details at the inaugural press conference tomorrow, but I intend to pursue proactive diplomacy under the motto of “vigorous diplomacy with broad perspective”.  As you are aware, there is a series of important diplomatic events starting this weekend. I would like to proceed with my work swiftly.

I would like to ask for your continued support, and I look forward to working with you.
