Emergency Assistance to Eastern Afghanistan in Response to the Earthquake

Foreign Press Secretary KITAMURA Toshihiro: At the outset, I have one announcement, regarding the earthquake in Afghanistan. The earthquake that occurred in eastern Afghanistan on September 1 has resulted in a large number of deaths and extensive damage. I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the lives lost and to their bereaved families. I also would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the disaster.

In response to the damages caused by this earthquake, today, on September 3, upon the request of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency relief goods, specifically tents, blankets and other relief goods, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to eastern Afghanistan. Japan has decided to provide this emergency assistance to support the people affected by the earthquake from the humanitarian perspective.
