Earthquake in Taiwan

Kyodo News, Hayashi: This morning, the Chief Cabinet Secretary explained the response to the earthquake in Taiwan, but I would like to ask if you have any new information about aid.

Ms. KOBAYASHI Maki, Press Secretary: The Prime Minister has just issued a message of condolences. We would also like to offer our wholehearted sympathies to all those affected by the massive earthquake that struck eastern Taiwan today.

With regard to future aid, the Prime Minister message mentions that “we sincerely appreciate the truly heartwarming support Japan received from the people of Taiwan, an important friend, after both the Great East Japan Earthquake and, recently, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.” The Prime Minister message adds that “as Taiwan, our neighbor across the sea, faces difficulties, Japan stands ready to provide necessary support” to the people of Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Government of Japan also stands ready to provide aid as needed.

As for Japanese victims of the disaster, after confirming with the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and announcements by the Taiwanese authorities, at this time, we have not received any information about deaths or injuries of Japanese residents so far. It was already mentioned at the morning press conference, but I would like to add this information.

Kyodo News, Hayashi: Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considering any action at the moment?

Press Secretary Kobayashi: As I stated, we stand ready to act, but we must first discuss matters with Taiwan, so at this time, I can say that we stand ready.
