Opening Remarks

Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs: I have just held a meeting with Member of the Central Politburo of the Communist Party of China Yang Jiechi.

Dr. Yang and I agreed to deepen Japan-China coordination in a wide range of fields, including enhancing information-sharing in relation to the novel coronavirus. I believe that we were able to engage in highly meaningful discussions.

We also discussed President Xi Jinping’s visit to Japan. At present there is no change to the schedule for President Xi’s visit. A visit to Japan by the Chinese President happens once a decade so we must ensure to produce substantial results. From that perspective, Dr. Yang and I agreed that Japan and China will continue to engage in close communication.
