The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)'s Decision to Only Use the Name "Sea of Japan"

Yomiuri Shimbun, FUKUDA: The IHO has formally decided to only use the name "Sea of Japan" in its nautical charts. Please tell us your reaction to this.

Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs: I believe that is good.

Entry Into Force of China's Export Control Law

NHK, YAMAMOTO: I would like to ask about China’s Export Control Law. The law has entered into force today. The list of target items and other details have not been disclosed yet, and attention is focused on how it will be applied. What are your views on this point?

Minister MOTEGI: In regard to China’s Export Control Law that entered into force today, it is not necessarily clear how it will be applied, including the scope of target items regulated for the reason of "national security and interests" as well as the possibility of its extraterritorial application. I believe it could affect the legitimate economic activities and supply chains of Japanese companies depending on its application.

This is of course not just an issue for Japanese companies. Ultimately, as the content and application methods of the law have not been disclosed, Japan will monitor with high interest how it is applied.
