The conclusion of the EU-UK future relationship negotiations
(Statement by Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu)

December 25, 2020
  1. On December 24, the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) announced the conclusion of the negotiations on the EU-UK future relationship. The Government of Japan welcomes that the negotiations have been concluded within the transition period with the hard work from both sides, and that issues such as the introduction of tariffs between the EU and the UK have been averted, which could have had a serious impact on the international economy. The Government of Japan hopes that the EU and the UK will swiftly take necessary measures including the approval of respective parliaments.

  2. The Government of Japan remains committed to further strengthening relations with the EU and the UK based on cooperative frameworks including economic partnership agreements. The Government of Japan will closely monitor the implementation of the agreement on the future relationship and continue to provide necessary support including information sharing to Japanese businesses based in the UK and the EU member states, with a view to ensuring their smooth operations.
