UN Secretary General’s Announcement of an Agreement on establishment of a Constitutional Committee

1. On September 23, UN Secretary General António Guterres announced that an agreement has been reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Negotiations Commission to establish a Constitutional Committee under the facilitation of the United Nations. The Government of Japan welcomes this announcement, which increases the momentum toward political settlement of the Syrian Crisis, and highly appreciates the efforts made by UN Special Envoy Pedersen in the conclusion of the agreement.
2. Japan strongly hopes that the Constitutional Committee will start its activities in the earliest timing in line with Geneva Communique and UN Security Council Resolution 2254, and that it will achieve substantial progress in the political process in Syria.
