Emergency Grant Aid for Sudanese Refugees in South Sudan
March 22, 2013

In Sudan, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has aggravated the humanitarian situation in the southern states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile since June 2011, resulting in an exodus of Sudanese to northern South Sudan (the Unity and Upper Nile states). The UN says some 180,000 refugees are enduring poor living conditions and thus in need of emergency assistance from the international community.
The situation prompted Japan to extend emergency grant aid totaling about two million dollars on July 13 last year to support the refugees.
This grant aid has allowed the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to dig wells and set up clinics at refugee camps in South Sudan, improving the health environment for the refugees.
