Emergency Grant Aid for Syrian Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons
March 22, 2013

In Syria, the conflict between authorities and rebel groups has continued since the anti-government demonstrations began in March 2011, against the backdrop of years of oppression and the Arab Spring. Refugees and internally displaced persons are increasing in number as violence and hostilities intensify. According to United Nations estimates, over one million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries and another two millions have been displaced internally. The UN says they are suffering from poor living conditions and even their lives are at risk and calls for immediate assistance from the international community.
The situation prompted Japan to extend emergency grant aid in February, May and August of 2012 totaling 13 million dollars to support Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and other neighboring countries as well as internally displaced Syrians.
This grant aid has made it possible to deliver health care services and relief supplies such as food and sanitary items to these refugees and internally displaced persons mainly though the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
