Humanitarian Assistance / Emergency Assistance

1. On June 14, the Government of Japan decided to extend additional Emergency Grant Aid of 10 million US dollars to support Syrian IDPs and refugees, in response to the serious situation in Syria where a string of oppression and violence has been continuing for more than two years.  Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced this assistance at the G8 Summit in Lough Earn, UK on June 17.
 
2. Japan scheduled to promptly distribute food, water and sanitation support etc., to IDPs in Syria and Syrian refugees fled to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq in coordination with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
 
3. As a result of this decision, Japan’s humanitarian assistance to Syria’s situation will total 90 million US dollars.
