Emergency Grant Aid to the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) United Nation Trust Fund
March 8, 2013
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency grant aid of 6 million dollars to AFISMA (African-led International Support Mission to Mali) United Nations Trust Fund, as a part of assistance toward AFISMA deployed to fight against terrorism in Mali. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Fumio Kishida announced this assistance at the 5th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) Ministerial Preparatory Meeting held on March 16-17 in Ethiopia.
- Through this aid, we are planning to support humanitarian mine clearance, to prevent social instability and to bring safety to Malians, particularly central and northern Mali from where terrorist groups retreated with the effort by the French military, Mali National Army as well as AFISMA.
- This emergency grant aid provides assistance with the aim to directly support African efforts to achieve the stabilization of Mali and the Sahel region. It is expected that this aid contributes, from a humanitarian perspective, to further advance the fight against terrorism and to promote the security and the consolidation of peace in the region.
- This aid acts as a concrete initiative under “Support for the Stabilization of Sahel, North Africa, and Middle East regions”, which is one of the “3 pillars” of foreign policy officially announced by Foreign Minister Kishida on January 29, following the terrorist attack on Japanese nationals in Algeria. This assistance will confirm our strong commitment toward fight against terrorism in collaboration with international community including African countries.
