Notes for Chapter 3
Note 1:The midterm elections involved 35 (about one-third) of the Senate's 100 seats, all 435 seats of the House of Representatives, and governorships in 36 states.
Note 2:In view of criticism of the conventional big-government approach of the Democratic Party, the "New Democrat" approach emphasizes individual responsibility and seeks to solve problems through efficient government.
Note 3:To complete the EMU process, it is necessary that economic conditions in the EU member countries converge. The Treaty on European Union stipulates five specific conditions that countries must meet before participating in the EMU, regarding the inflation rate, the ratio of government deficit to GDP, the ratio of government debt to GDP, the exchange rate, and the long-term interest rate.
Note 4:In January 1995 the CSCE was renamed the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
