Nigeria

In November, 1993, Nigeria installed a military government, dismantled the national assembly and political parties, and imposed a ban on all political gatherings. Viewing these actions as a setback to the democratization process, Japan began watching carefully to see if they would be followed by serious steps aimed at putting that process back on track. However, Nigeria failed to introduce any tangible initiatives designed to return its government to civilian rule. As a result, in March 1994, Japan decided to suspend all aid to the country in principle, except for emergency aid of a humanitarian nature.
