Contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM)

- On Friday, 29 November, the Government of Japan decided to extend aid of US$69.05 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).
- In June 2001, on his visit to the United States of America, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi expressed Japan's intention to provide a total of US$200 million to the GFATM, and US$11 million was provided in March 2002 as part of this figure. The current additional contribution brings the total of Japan's contribution in this calendar year to US$80.05 million.
- Other major countries have also announced that they will contribute to the GFATM, including the United States, which has pledged US$500 million (US$250 million already contributed) and Italy, which has pledged US$200 million (US$186 million already contributed), and the current total of contributions pledged, including those from the private sector, has been announced at US$2.14286 billion.
