RERE ( Renewable-Energy-Based Rural Electrifiacation ) Initiative

1. What is RERE initiative?

RERE initiative aims to promote introduction of renewable energy-based electrification into off-grid villages in Asia-Pacific island nations, and transfer of related technology to the region by making a model example in an off-grid village in Fiji.

This initiative includes acitivities to:

  • Promote and develop renewable technology appropriate to the marine and tropical environment of the Asia-Pacific region such as strong sunlight and wind ( e.g., hybrid power systems consisting of diesel generators, solar batteries, and wind turbine generators; solar home systems for remote villages. ).
  • Assist, facilitate and support application of renewable energy-based electrification through technical services, education, and training for the sustainable development of the region.

2. Background

Promotion and development of renewable energy technology appropriate to the marine and tropical environment is critically important for electrification of remote villages in the Asia-Pacific region as well as economic properity and environmental protection for the region.

3. Acitivities

(1) Reserch and Development at Facility at Kahua Ranch, Hawaii
Applied research and development activities related to testing appropriate renewable energy systems for implementation in village hybrid power systems

(2) Operations Support and Monitoring of the Hybrid Village Power System and Solar Home System ( SHS ) inVanua Levu, Fiji
Making operation and maintenance plans, and supervision of the systems

(3) Additional Solar Home Systems
Additional SHSs for Vanua Levu have been installed to support the expansion of the network and develop a locally staffed and financially viable Renewable Energy Services Company.

(4) Technical Training
Technical training on hybrid and solar home system in order to train private and public sectors Fijian technicians and engineers.
