Energy Literacy Initiative

December 2002

Japan proposed the "Energy Literacy Initiative" as one of its Type 2 projects of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

1. Definition

An initiative to promote energy education globally and improve people's understanding on energy, with a view to facilitating the realization of energy-efficient and recycling based society.

2. Background

Sustainable development is only possible in a world where all the people have a common understanding on the appropriate use of energy and the importance of energy conservation, energy efficiency and harmony with environment, i.e. high energy literacy rate. We could say that, however, there is general lack of knowledge on energy.

3. Specific Actions

(1) Implementation of energy-related programmes and activities for children
(Energy Boy Scout, Energy Summer School, etc.)

(2) Implementation of energy-related courses for adults
(Open Universities, Adult Schools, Energy-related Symposiums, etc.)

(3) Dispatch of relevant energy experts responding to a request from a community who wishes to improve its energy literacy

(4) Development of a network of international organizations and institutions for improvement of energy literacy
(Coordination with existing international organizations and institutions on energy and human resources development, etc.)

4. Partners (as of December 2002)

United Kingdom, Australia, Republic of Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, World Bank, UNEP, UNDP
