Science and Technology for Improved Environmental Policy Making
- Asia-Pacific Environmental Innovation Strategy Project (APEIS) -
1. BACKGROUND
In developing countries, the vicious cycle of environmental degradation and poverty, and the unavailability of accurate environmental data make it very difficult to find a tangible way toward sustainable development.
To abate this situation, the Plan of Implementation for the WSSD states the necessity of assisting developing countries, through international cooperation, to enhance their capacity in formulating and implementing environmental policies by improving their use of science and technology for environmental monitoring, assessment models and accurate database development. With close interaction between the scientific community and policy makers, the Asia-Pacific Environmental Innovation Strategy Project (APEIS) offers new concrete regional actions to realize this part of the Plan of Implementation.
2. OBJECTIVES
- To develop scientific knowledge-based tools and innovative strategy options to promote informed decision-making for sustainable development for the use of policy makers in the Asia-Pacific region.
- To promote regional cooperation and capacity building so as to enable Asia-Pacific countries to formulate and implement their own environmental policies.
3. ACTIVITIES
- Development of monitoring methodologies and networks that cover environmental disasters and degradation, and make full use of satellite technologies.
- Development of a set of assessment models to assess and predict the trends of environmental emissions and natural resources, and subsequent impacts.
- Development of a strategic database and innovative strategy options for practical use by policy makers, enabling informed decision-making.
