Tuberculosis (TB) Control Projects
1. Definition
To share the knowledge and experience obtained from Japanese cooperation to promote worldwide TB control through the networking of the past and current cooperation for TB control.
2. Background
TB is one of the most important infectious diseases. It is estimated that one third of the world population is infected with TB bacilli, 8 million people develop the disease and about 3 million people die of TB annually. In accordance with HIV/AIDS pandemic, multi - drug resistant TB has been promoted. And also, inappropriate or inconsistent treatment has been factors of outbreak of TB with HIV/AIDS.
At the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in July 2000, Japan declared Okinawa Infectious Diseases Control Initiative, and Japan participated in the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as a board member of the Fund.
Japan has a long history and experience of the cooperation for TB control, which is expected to be shared and utilized among the relevant countries.
3. Details
For the present, JICA is planning and implementing its projects for dissemination of DOTS (Directly Observed Therapy, Short course) as the most efficient and effective intervention package for TB control for the following countries.
Cambodia: August 1999 - July 2004, Nepal: April 1987 - September 2005, Philippines: September 1992 - August 2007, Yemen: September 1983 - August 2004, Zambia: March 2001 - March 2006, And preparing in Afghanistan (November 1974 - March 1979), Indonesia: October 2002 - September 2007, Myanmar: January 2003 - December 2007, and Pakistan: October 2002 - September 2000
