Chagas Disease Vector Control Projects
1.Definition
To establish a model for vector control of Chagas disease in Guatemala, which could be applicable to other Central American countries, and to interrupt the transmission of Chagas disease in Central America by 2010 (the objective of PAHO/WHO Initiative)
2. Background
It is estimated that over 20 million people in South and Central America,about 2.44 million people, ( 9% of the population ), in Central America, and about 730 thousand people in Guatemala ( 7% of the population ) are infected with Chagas Disease.
It is evidenced that eliminating the vector R. prolixus and reducing the vector T. dimidiata lead to sustainable outcome for Chagas disease control.
Central American seven countries and Pan American Health Organization /World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) announced the Chagas disease Initiative in Central America to interrupt the transmission of Chagas disease in Central America by 2010.
Japan has started its cooperation for Chagas disease control in Guatemala since January 2000. It is expected to expand this project nationwide and regionwide through bilateral technical cooperation and South-south cooperation support program of Japanese government, in the partnership with PAHO/WHO.
3. Details
Investigation of Vector distribution areas, Spraying of insecticide, Evaluation after spraying, Educationand Campaign for vector control through schools and health volunteers, Disseminating the houses reforming method to eliminate the favorable conditions of the vectors (including development of the manual), Disseminating the Chagas disease control method to other Central American countries, etc.

Ministry of Health of Guatemala and neighboring countries, PAHO/WHO, Central American Integration System (Sistema Integral de Centro America / SICA) etc.
