TICAD Workshop - Contribution to African Development -

Overview

On August 31, 2002, the Government of Japan, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organized a TICAD (the Tokyo International Conference on African Development) workshop at the Japan Pavilion, Ubuntu Exhibition Village, Johannesburg as one of the WSSD side-events.

More than 100 participants had an opportunity to deepen their understanding about TICAD process through presentations by panelists including Mr. Kimio Fujita, Special Assistant to the Minister for foreign affairs of Japan, Mr. Zephirin Diabre, Associate Administrator, UNDP and Mr. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, Executive Secretary, Global Coalition for Africa(GCA). The workshop also provided information on TICAD's history since 1993 when TICAD I was convened, its mission and its various follow-up activities.

Participants reaffirmed that the TICAD process has provided fundamental and comprehensive policy guidelines on African development and emphasized its initiative on maintaining African development as an important item on the international agenda.

The chairperson of the workshop confirmed that TICAD III is scheduled in October 2003.

Programme

Session 1: Opening remarks

Mr. Kimio Fujita, Special Assistant to the Minister for foreign affairs of Japan (Former JICA President), Chairperson, made the opening remarks on behalf of the Government of Japan by introducing the TICAD process, its mission and some specific follow-up activities.

Session 2: Presentations by panelists

  • Mr. Zephirin Diabre, Associate Administrator, UNDP:
    TICAD's mission from the perspective of UN (UNDP, OSCAL) as a co-organizer
  • Mr. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, Executive Secretary, Global Coalition for Africa (GCA):
    Inter-linkages and possible collaboration between TICAD and NEPAD
  • Mr. Kul C. Gautam, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF:
    Putting children at the center of NEPAD and TICAD
  • Mr. Mohamed Tahir Jamhari, Director, Asia-Africa Investment & Technology Promotion Center in Malaysia (Hippalos Center):
    Activities of the Hippalos Center and the importance of Asia-Africa Cooperation as one of major TICAD activities
  • Mr. Markus Moses, Managing Director, Ndawo Consulting as the Representative of Private sector in South Africa:
    Role of the private sector in African development
