Workshops Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy for Sustainable Development in Asia

With the recognition that economic growth is indispensable for poverty reduction and sustainable development, we will take up the issue of poverty and growth in Asia and discuss effective development assistance for physical and institutional infrastructure for sustainable development.

Workshop 1 "PRSP in Asia: Poverty Reduction Policy in Vietnam "

Outline : JBIC has supported transition to the market economy in Vietnam, and joined efforts to draw up the poverty reduction policy as a member of the poverty task force during the PRSP preparation process. Drawing on these experiences, JBIC takes Vietnamese PRSP as a good example to make a point that the economic growth is indispensable for poverty reduction. In addition, JBIC sets out that it is essential to develop infrastructure and improve investment environment, if the inflow of the private financing, an integral part of the economic growth, is to be encouraged. The Seminar will also explore the possibility of applying this experience to other regions such as Africa.

Workshop 2 "Partnership for Sustainable Development: NGO, Private Sector and Local Government"

Outline : Through ODA loans and other facilities, JBIC provides multifaceted environmental assistance to the Philippines, including support for pollution control measures. Meanwhile, in Metro Cebu, the Philippines, the City of Kitakyushu, Japan and its citizens have been assisting the introduction of "Cleaner Production" (an effort to alleviate environmental burden in corporate activities). On the part of Cebu, the civil society, private sector as well as the local government are actively involved. To examine feasibility of Cleaner Production in Metro Cebu, JBIC has commissioned a study to the City of Kita-Kyushu. As part of side events to WSSD, presentation will be made on the roles of NGOs, private sector and local governments in promoting sustainable development.

Workshop 3 "Infrastructure Development and Poverty Reduction"

Outline : "Poverty reduction" is a key theme in development assistance. JBIC has supported a number of infrastructure development projects and there has been increasing demand to clarify the relationship between infrastructure development and poverty alleviation. In this workshop, where irrigation infrastructure projects are taken as an example, residents of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, where those projects were taken place, make presentations about the impact of irrigation development. The World Bank staff then makes comments on the poverty reduction efforts through construction of infrastructure in the water sector, and private sector participant from South Africa makes comments based on his experience of assistance in privatization, in order to facilitate discussions on linkage between infrastructure development and living conditions of the poor.

2. Exhibition

Venue: Ubuntu Exhibition Site (108 square meters to be jointly used with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA))
Description: In partnership with JICA, 108 square-meter booth is set up to introduce good practices of Japan's ODA projects by panels, distributing brochures such as JBIC annual report, JBIC's Medium Term Strategy for Overseas Economic Cooperation Operation, etc. The themes for panel introduction include: environment, education, health care, economic and social infrastructure, and support for Africa.
