1. Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol was adopted at the Third Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) held in Kyoto with the aim to achieve the goal stipulated in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to stabilize the greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. It mandates developed country and other Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least a fixed percentage (6% for Japan, 7% for the United States and 8% for the European Union) during the period from 2008 to 2012 compared to the level in 1990. The Kyoto Protocol will enter into force on February 16, 2005.


2. Commemorative Event to Mark the Entry into Force of the Kyoto Protocol

On the same day as the Kyoto Protocol enters into force, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, in conjunction with the governments of Kyoto Prefecture and Kyoto City, will hold a commemorative event to mark its entry into force as a significant step in international efforts to address the issue of global warming. The event will be held at the Kyoto International Conference Hall, where the COP3 itself took place also.

The event will be broadcast live on the Internet.
