By making good use of its attractive local features, which include beautiful seas and a rich natural environment as well as a unique history and culture, Okinawa Prefecture is trying to build up year-round high-quality tourist resort areas that meet a wide variety of needs. Examples of this effort include the establishment of international marine resort spots and total health recreation facilities for the general public, and the promotion of experience-type and residential-type tourism such as eco-tourism, green tourism, etc., as well as the building of a convention center.
Among the core tourist spots in Okinawa which are gathering widespread attention both in Japan and overseas are the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, including Shuri Castle, that were registered as World Heritage Sites in November 2000, and the huge Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, which among its many other superlatives has the world's largest acrylic window.
