Making full use of its geographical and historical advantages, Niigata Prefecture carries out exchanges with many regions overseas centered on Northeast Asia spanning a wide range of fields including culture, education, and agriculture, forestry and fisheries, etc.
At present, international flights are operating on seven routes between Niigata Airport and destinations in China, South Korea, and Russia, allowing easy access to and from the rest of the world by changing flights at Seoul or Shanghai. In addition, sea routes to six countries abroad are operating from the ports of Niigata and Naoetsu.
Niigata Prefecture has concluded a treaty of friendship with the Heilongjiang Province in China, and apart from that the prefecture is promoting a variety of friendly exchanges in the academic, technological, economic and other fields with places in Russia, South Korea, and the U.S.A., centered on the Pacific Rim area.
Moreover, Niigata City has formed sister-city or friendship city exchanges with Galveston in the U.S.A., Harbin in China, and Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, and Birobidzhan in Russia, and has recently begun active exchanges with Nantes in France and Ulsan in South Korea.
