Boso Peninsula prospered during the Edo Period from the 17th to 19th centuries, with waterways linking the region with the capital Edo, today's Tokyo. The prefecture is still rich with cultural resources with historical profiles of Edo, such as towns developed around castles and major temples, as well as old commercial quarters that flourished with ship transportation business. Furthermore, the Prefectual Boso no Mura Museum offers programs for visitors to experience the lives and activities of the Edo era.
Chiba is also musical: it enjoys lively activities of amateur brass bands, symphony orchestras and citizens' operas. While its schools boast records of the nation's top level music education activities, the Chiba Prefecture Boys and Girls Orchestra gains a high reputation across the country, with the performance by its members aged 10 to 20 years old.
