Aomori Prefecture is a treasure house of ancient remains that tell us a great deal about the Jomon culture from which Japan's civilization sprang. A prime example are the remains at the Sannai-Maruyama site, which was continuously occupied from about 5500 to 4000 years ago in what was once the central region of Jomon culture. Aomori Prefecture is currently attempting to have Sannai-Maruyama listed as a World Heritage Site.

In historical times too, Aomori has nurtured its own distinctive culture such as that centered on the old castle town of Hirosaki. Visitors to Hirosaki today can get a strong feel for the history of this place though encounters with its surviving historic buildings and vibrant cultural heritage.
