- The International Coral Reef Initiative, developed from the Japan-United States Common Agenda, as an effort to conserve coral reefs. Under the auspices of the IRCI, the International Coral Reef Workshop was held in the Philippines during May of 1995. The ICRI promotes regional programs divided into six regions throughout the world. Japan plays a leading role in the East Asian region, and in February 1997 Japan hosted the second ICRI Regional Workshop for East Asian Seas in Okinawa (participants included Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
