Announcement for International Symposium on "Towards the Mutual Understanding between Sustainable Use and Protection of Marine Resources"
to be held at the Mita Kaigisho (8-1-2 Mita Minatoku, Tokyo)
in the afternoon of 25 February (Wednesday)
Every year the Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds symposium to obtain deeper understanding of the people on the various international issues related to fisheries, which is important to Japan as a seafaring nation.
Should maritime resources be utilized or should they be protected? Are utilization and protection of maritime resources in conflict with each other or are they compatible? -- The symposium this year will have "Towards the Mutual Understanding Between Sustainable use and protection of Marine Resources" as its theme, inviting people from various fields at home and abroad including academia and mass media, to provide lectures centering on the issue of whaling, which is specifically one of the issues to be highlighted in this regard. It is expected that the lecturers, who have in-depth knowledge on the issues of whaling, fishery and the environment from each of their own standpoints, will look into the issue of "sustainable use and protection" from a broad perspective.
The panelists invited this year are:
- Dr. HAYASHI Yoshihiro (Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, Tokyo University) (Former President of the Society for the Study of Human Animal Relations)
- Dr. Robert NELSON (Professor, School of Public Affairs, University of Maryland)
- Dr. MORITA Katsuaki (Professor, Faculty of Letters, Konan Women's University)
- Mr. Jeremy BRISTOW (BBC director and producer of the film 'Whale Hunters')
