Japan-Canada Relations

  1. On December 10th, 2019, the 29th Meeting of the Japan-Canada Joint Economic Committee (JEC) was held in Toronto, Canada.
  2. The Japanese side was chaired by Mr. KANASUGI Kenji, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Mr. Jonathan Fried, Coordinator, International Economic Relations and Personal Representative of the Prime Minister for the G20, Global Affairs Canada participated as acting co-chair for Canadian side on behalf of Deputy Minister Hannaford. Other attendants included Mr. KAWAMURA Yasuhisa, Ambassador designate of Japan to Canada, Mr. Ian Burney, Ambassador of Canada to Japan, as well as officials from both Japanese and Canadian governments and the Embassy of Canada in Japan.
  3. In the meeting, the co-chairs exchanged views on recent situations surrounding international economy and discussed the priority areas of cooperation, namely, (1) energy, (2) infrastructure, (3) science and technology cooperation, (4) tourism and youth exchanges, and (5) improving business environment and promoting investment.
