On May 23, commencing at 11:00 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. The two leaders broadly exchanged views on issues such as the Japan-U.S. Consultation on U.S. Tariff Measures and economic security cooperation.
  2. The two leaders also exchanged their views on diplomatic and security challenges. In that conversation, President Trump shared the outcomes of his recent visit to the Middle East and Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his appreciation to such diplomatic efforts by the United States.
  3. Prime Minister Ishiba conveyed Japan’s position on U.S. tariff measures. Prime Minister Ishiba also stated that Minister Akazawa, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization of Japan, was en route to Washington D.C. and expressed his hope that a productive consultation will be held between the ministers. President Trump concurred on this point.
  4. Prime Minister Ishiba stated that he looked forward to holding an in-person meeting on the occasion of the upcoming G7 Summit. In response, President Trump stated that he would also look forward to it.
