On January 9, commencing at 5:45 a.m. (local time: 3:45 p.m., January 8) for approximately 30 minutes, former Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, held a meeting with Senator William Hagerty of the United States Senate during his visit to Washington D.C. for attending the official state funeral for Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States of America. The overview is as follows:

  1. Special Envoy Suga expressed his deepest condolences to the Government and the people of the United States on the passing of Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States of America. Special Envoy Suga also expressed his deep respect for former President Jimmy Carter’s accomplishments through his tireless efforts not only during his presidency but throughout his life for the United States and world.
  2. Senator Hagerty expressed his appreciation to Special Envoy Suga for his visit to the United States. and attendance to the official state funeral.
  3. Special Envoy Suga stated that he would like to continue raising the Japan-U.S. Alliance to new heights as the second Trump administration is going to be inaugurated soon and expressed his wish to continue receiving support from Senator Hagerty. Senator Hagerty stated that he would spare no effort in assisting. The two sides affirmed to work on upholding and bolstering the Japan-U.S. Alliance from their respective positions.
