On January 7, commencing at 2:45 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru, received a courtesy call from the Honorable Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States of America, during his visit to Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed the visit of Secretary Blinken to Japan, and expressed his deepest condolences on the passing of Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President of the United States, last December. Prime Minister Ishiba also expressed his sympathies on the truck attack that occurred in New Orleans, in the southern part of the U.S. on January 1st (local time).
  2. Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized the importance of strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance deterrence and response capabilities, and cooperation as global partners at the core of a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
  3. Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized the importance of coordination of like-minded countries, including Japan-Australia-India-U.S., Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK), and Japan-U.S.-Philippines. Also, on the economy, the two sides affirmed the importance of the bilateral economic ties including investment by Japanese companies.
  4. The two sides exchanged their views on regional situations such as policies issues related to China, the situation in Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East. The two sides reaffirmed the importance of the cooperation of Japan and the U.S.
  5. Lastly, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his intention to work on developing Japan-U.S. relations which has been built with President Biden and Secretary Blinken.
