The state of the dinner among Minister Hayashi and members of the U.S. Congress

On July 28, commencing at 6:30 p.m. (local time. 7:30 a.m. on July 29, Japan time.), for approximately 105 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Washington D.C., hosted a dinner with the members of the U.S. Congress. The overview of the dinner is as follows.

  1. At the outset, the Senators and Representatives offered their condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, and Senator Hagerty presented Minister Hayashi with the recently adopted Senate resolution in remembrance of former Prime Minister Abe. In response, Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude for their sympathies, noting that in addition to the Senate, the House of Representatives is proceeding with an adoption of a similar resolution, and stated that he would carry on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe and redouble his efforts on furthering Japan's diplomacy.
  2. Minister Hayashi stated that in light of the increasingly severe international situation, it is important to strengthen the Japan-U.S. Alliance. He also stated that, for the peace and development in the Indo-Pacific region, strong and sustained engagement of the U.S. in the region is essential in the area of economy, as well as diplomacy and security, and stressed the importance of the early return of the U.S. to the TPP. In response, the Senators and Representatives expressed firm support for the Japan-U.S. Alliance, including the prioritized allocation of resources to the Indo-Pacific region.
