Bilateral Relationship

Political relationship:

  • Japan and the United States are strong allies sharing basic values and strategic interests, with the Japan-U.S. Security Arrangements at the core. Under such a strong alliance, both countries are closely working together and sharing roles and responsibilities not only on bilateral issues, but on regional issues in the Asia-Pacific and global issues as well.

Trade with Japan (2013):

  • Exports to U.S.: 1.413 billion dollars (excluding service trade) (Automobile, Automobile parts, Motor, Computer parts)
  • Imports from U.S.: 66.5 billion dollars (excluding service trade) (Aircraft products, Medical supplies, Scientific and optical instruments, Cereals)

Direct Investment Position (2013):

  • Japan's Direct Investment to U.S.: 34.9 trillion yen (End of 2013 Asset balance)
  • Direct Investment from U.S. to Japan: 5.5 trillion yen (End of 2013 Asset balance)

Number of Residents (2012):

  • Number of Japanese nationals residing in U.S.: 410,973 (Oct. 2012)
  • Number of American nationals residing in Japan: 48,357 (Dec. 2012) (Excluding diplomats, those staying for public reasons, U.S. Forces in Japan)
