Japan-Canada Summit Telephone Talk

On September 30, commencing at around 10:00 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. SUGA Yoshihide, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister Suga offered his greetings as the newly appointed Prime Minister and expressed his wish to build a good relationship with Prime Minister Trudeau while exercising leadership for peace and stability within the regional and international communities. In response, Prime Minister Trudeau extended his congratulations for Prime Minister Suga’s appointment to office. He also expressed his hope to cooperate with Prime Minister Suga in further developing Japan-Canada relations and promoting the rule of law in the international community.
- Following this, both leaders exchanged their views on their respective efforts to combat COVID-19 and affirmed their continued close cooperation.
- Both leaders then exchanged views on regional affairs in the East and South China Seas and shared the view on their continuous cooperation toward the implementation of a free and open Indo-Pacific. In addition, Prime Minister Suga requested a continuation of Canada’s collaboration and support in addressing North Korea, including ship-to-ship transfers and the abduction issue. Prime Minister Trudeau indicated his approval, and the two leaders shared the view on working closely in these areas.
