Implementation of FY2015 Local Staff Training Program in Japan
(1) The training program was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan from October 18 to 25, in which 59 local staff members working at Japan’s overseas missions (Embassies, Consulates, and Permanent Missions) participated. The local staff is essential to the diplomatic service. The 59 members (Note 1) are the ones selected among approximately 5,200 local staff (members) worldwide with recognition of their particularly outstanding performance.
(Note 1) Total of 59 members: 17 from Asia, 2 from Oceania, 5 from North America, 7 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 13 from Europe, 5 from the Middle East, and 10 from Africa
(2) The training program included lectures by the relevant bureaus and divisions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Note 2) and Lecture on “WASHOKU”Japanese Food and on Manners and visits to the surrounding areas of Tokyo. On October 19, the 59 participants paid a courtesy call on Mr. Yoji MUTO, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and received his words of appreciation and encouragement.
(Note 2) Lectures by senior and other officials of the Ministry and external instructors on administrative work, consular affairs, public diplomacy, Japan’s foreign policy, international law, Japan’s economy, Information Security, Japan’s International Cooperation etc.
(1) The participants deepened their understanding of the mechanisms and policies concerning the various tasks of Japan’s overseas missions, and acquired the latest information and firsthand knowledge about Japan. It is expected that the training will lead to their further contributions to the missions’ work and accordingly strengthening of Japan’s diplomatic activities.
(2) It is also expected that such training will vitalize the activities of Japan’s overseas missions not only by increasing the capacities of the participating local staff but also by providing further incentives for all local staff of Japan’s overseas missions to engage in their daily work at the frontlines of diplomacy.
