Japan-Qatar Relations

On September 15, commencing at 5:00 p.m., Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar for approximately 20 minutes. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he is delighted to speak with Amir Tamim again, following the telephone talk in April this year, and expressed his gratitude for the message of condolences from Amir Tamim on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe. In response, Amir Tamim once again offered his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Qatar is an important partner for Japan and expressed his intention to elevate the comprehensive partnership between Japan and Qatar to the strategic level and to work with Amir Tamim to strengthen bilateral cooperation. In addition, Prime Minister Kishida once again expressed his gratitude for Qatar’s assistance in the departure of those who have relations with Japan from Afghanistan. In response, Amir Tamim expressed his renewed hopes for strengthening bilateral relations with Japan, and the two leaders confirmed their commitment to closely work together.
  3. The two leaders confirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation in the energy sector and agreed to jointly promote efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.
  4. In addition, the two leaders confirmed to further strengthen the partnership between Japan and Qatar by promoting a wide range of cooperation not only in the energy sector, but also in various fields including economic, security, defense and academic exchange, through the framework of “Japan-Qatar Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue”, especially on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Qatar.
