On October 2, commencing at 11:40 a.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, met with H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, who is visiting Japan.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI welcomed Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed’s visit to Japan on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the 20th Asian Games (Aichi-Nagoya 2026), and expressed her desire to work together toward the success of the next Asian Games which is scheduled to be held in Doha in 2030.
  2. Prime Minister TAKAICHI, then, expressed serious concern over the continuing military tensions surrounding Iran and the significant challenges to the maritime order based on the rule of law. She also expressed her deep respect for the important role that Qatar has been playing as a mediator. Against this backdrop, she stated that Japan would like to work closely with Qatar toward an early de-escalation of the situation.
  3. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stated that Japan has been formulating a comprehensive cooperation plan aimed at strengthening the economic and energy resilience of the Gulf countries, including Qatar.
  4. In response, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed extended his congratulations on the success of 20th Asian Games and expressed his expectation for cooperation with Japan toward the next Asian Games in Doha. He also stated that Qatar places great importance on its economic partnership with Japan, and expressed his desire to further strengthen cooperation in various fields, including investment and AI, as well as the traditional cooperation in the energy sector.
  5. Regarding the situation surrounding Iran, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed explained the current status of talks between the United States and Iran, and stated that he wished to work closely with Japan toward an early de-escalation of the situation and the restoration of freedom of navigation. He also expressed his gratitude for Japan’s contributions to strengthening the economic and energy resilience of the Gulf countries, and stated his expectation that Japan will continue to play an active role in promoting the stability and development of the Gulf region.
